May 31 Double-5 FestivalToday is 5th of May according to Lunar Calendar in China, it also has the tradition of eating Zong Zi, which is a kind of dumpling made by sticky rice with different tastes, sweet with red beans and jujube, or salty with meat.
To tell the truth, I really forgot this day if Tm didn't remind me last night, and I'm not interested in eating Zong Zi as well because most of them are made of beans which I hate most, except meat ones, which I love best. I'm really a Meat Ancestor!
So, hungry girls gathered again this afternoon, we ate up our lunch and assigned Zong Zi that Jessie Q bought from China Town. I paid 1.80AUD for two, one is meat, the other is bean, and quickly they went into my stomach within 1 minutes......Because they are too small, the meat one is relatively bigger than the bean one, but still not so big as the one on pics below:
I really prefer meat! May 30 Sewing My SocksI really don't know why two of my socks are worn-out almost at the same time, maybe I use them too frequently and let other new ones lying in my drawer? Actually they are still in good condition with bright color and design, that's why I love to wear them except for a small hole just in front of my toe, but why, I just cut my nails 2 days before......
As a good girl following the tradition, I must make full use of my stuffs, socks as wells as sewing tools, so till now I've mended the hole for white ones which I am wearing now. As you guys know, it's autumn night with winter cold, although we have air-conditioner, it is still necessary to avoid using it in order to maintain moisture, so wearing socks in the room makes me feel warmer.
Another blue pair, I just changed and dipped it into the laundry powder, cleaning first, and then sewing. I still don't wanna start using those new ones, not because they are not good-looking, just because I wanna use these two pairs until they are really worn-out, which means I can no longer renew them and the only choice is to throw them off. May 29 AUG Volunteer TrainingTm, Jessie and I have applied the volunteer positons of AUG (Australian University Games) in 2006, which is the largest annual muti-sport event since it started in 1993. We're also lucky to involve in this event, although volunteer means no pay and may cost some transportion fee, which is undoubtedly an experience full of fun as well as challenges. The last time of AUG in Adelaide was in 2002, and four years later, in 2006, we are here!
After today's training program, we attended the Uni's Reconciliation Celebration with free BBQ. To tell the truth, I did know there would be a free BBQ in my campus and I just didn't know it happened this afternoon. Thanks to the training course that made me get up earlier than usual and it also finished in advance(it was supposed to finish till 12:00pm, atcually we got dismissed before 12:00), and thanks to Jessie who told me this important information after training, though she always missed the key before, this time she really helped much, thanks to all of which, so that I caught the free BBQ and drinks just before I went to my tutorial at 1:00pm. May 28 ScheduleMay 26 May's Last FridayIt's a sunny day today and it's already the last Friday of this month. As you guys know, it's a really harvest-day as well because I can get free fruits and vegetables again......
Another achievement I've made today——I can remember the whole music of Doomsday, and also can play it by piano completely. Actually I've started this song for several months since the new year's coming, but this semester I don't have enough time to practise, furthermore, the more songs I've learned, the more practices I need. Even this song is easier than other songs I've learned, such as Turkish March which is not played well till now, finally I finished learning it today! But it seems that I made little progress on playing the piano this year, as compared to last year, I'd learned at least 8 songs which are much more complicated than Doomsday!
Tonight I got chicken claws again, and got something new, they call it Honey Cone, actually I cannot distinguish whether it is 牛肚 or 牛百叶, which is the same thing as I thought before. But today the supermarket clerk told me that, these two things are totally different! Anyway, that's not the main point, what I concern is whether it is fresh and yum! After all, Tm has become a vegetarian so that I'm the only one who'is addicted to meat in our room!
Ah, several weeks ago I picked a yellow semi-mature tomato on my way home, and it became red today. Just put it into the sour&hot noddles and boil them together, Wow! May 22 Bus AccidentI just finished my shopping in China Town and was ready to go home, waiting in the front of Coles......Suddenly, a booming sound attracted all the passersby, looking along the sound we found that a bus crashed the lampstandard, which has fallen onto the groud. Fortunately, noboby was injured in the accident.
There was no person standing beside the lampstandard at that moment and the driver looked calm who was making a call. The front door of that bus was totally destroyed with leaking gasoline...... I really wish to take a picture to record this spot, but it isn't a good manner if taking such disaster, after all, I'm not the one who always adds trouble to others.
Today I made a small mistake, because I bought the wrong thing——I had thought it should have peanuts or some other nutlets inside, but there's only 'licorice rocket' with strange flavor, not only strange, which even makes me sick. So just make it as Hot Chocolate and throw those rockets away...... ![]() May 19 Stupid ATMDamned ATM, ate my card, and didn't wanna return it even before I got my money! I just need to withdraw 20AUD, and I didn't make any mistake on operating the machine!
So stupid the emergency call was, also invalid, saying that, the number you called is not available......SHIT! What could I do? Use my cell phone to call customer service, which at least wasted my 1AUD! Unavailable again!!!!!!
Totally hopeless, especially it was already after woring hours and the gate was locked......But through the gate I saw there were some bank staffs inside, so I tried to call them out, knocking the door and yelling.....
Finally a tall man came out to help me fixed the stupid ATM, and also check my card to ensure whether there's some other problems. Ok, everything is ok, I got my card and money back. What a 'surprise' it was! May 18 Small WeekendThursday again, which is an extra holiday during weekdays and I call it small weekend. This semester I chose 4 courses again but I arranged my time table better so that I get one day off on every Thursday. Last semester's small weekend was Friday, just followed by real weekend!
Initially, I had a tutorial on Thursday, only a tutorial on that morning! But it seems that I don't have to go to Uni just for one-hour tutorial as well as sacrificing my early sleeping. Morevoer, there is another tutorial time that I can choose. So I just emaiied the tutor to claim that I had to work on Thursday, so that she permitted me to change the tutorial time to Wednesday afternoon.
As you know, I just plan to have a casual job, actually, I don't have to work on every Thursday! It's so easy to arrange your own time here and everything is negotiable, of course, most of Aussie are easygoing, that's why everthing happens naturally.
The problem is, tomorrow, I have to get up very early compared to other days. Because IF starts at 9:00am, although the lecturer taking the sencond part has strong accent and it's really hard to catch what he said, I still need to attend the lecture. Because this semester I've never skip this class and I don't want to break my record.
From the detail above, you can see that I can control myself very well as soon as there's something important. But how can I convert such ability to the diet stuff? May 17 Part of ReviewI've received the adaptation from my Canadian friend, who made a clear and systematic structure for my review.
Tonight I just finished improving my review as he adviced, he said in his email that, it sounds I'm gonna get A!
Hope so la......
A part of the original version is shown below:
Paper Review: The Relative Sophistication of Chinese Exports
China has been playing a key role in the world trade system by its improving exports capability during the last quarter century, which is also associated with China’s rapid growth. How does such marvel happen and what’s the special about Chinese exports? On the other word, how can Chinese exports account for such a huge market share and achieve high product penetration in United States compared to other competitors? The paper is written by Peter K. Schott, an Associate Professor of Economics at the Yale School of Management, who estimates the relative ‘sophistication’ of Chinese exports to the United States through two dimensions, which is the main section of the paper. The first one is Chinese export bundle compared to those of OECD countries and other United States trading partners, which are relatively skill or capital abundant and have similar endowments, respectively. Secondly, Schott uses prices within product categories to examine whether there is a premium or discount relative to China’s development level and the exports from OECD countries, where China’s development level is measured by per capita GDP.
The whole analysis of this paper is under the guide of factor proportions framework which is strongly related to the multiple cone equilibrium of Heckscher-Ohlin model by using Lerner Diagram which combines unit value isocosts and unit value isoquants with the assumption of two- factor version1, labor and capital. Heckscher-Ohlin theory states that a country will export the final good which makes relatively intensive use of the production factor that is relatively abundant in this country, which is consistent with the theory of comparative advantages which says a country will export the final good which has comparative advantages, such as higher production or lower cost compared to the other goods produced in this country relative to another country. As we all know that China is a typical labor-abundant country with its huge population, which results in the predomination of manufacturing exports from China. ...... The basic methodology used in this paper is the regression model under the OLS assumption. The data were mainly focused on manufacturing product because its greatest market share. Schott introduced two concepts before he ran regression, one is the market share of region r in year t and industry i, which is the ratio of imports from region r to the total imports from all the countries in year t and industry i in United States, denoted by MStri, and the other is export similarity index (ESI), which is defined by Finger and Kreinin (1979) to merge both market share and product penetration, and ESItcd =∑min (Stpc, Stpd), where Stpc(Stpd) means the share of country c’s(d’s) exports in manufacturing product p in year t. But Schott made a small amendment of using region-level other than country-level in order to compare China with OECD, Asia (excluding China) and Latin America, which are all regions. Data show that China’s ESI with other regions has grown over time, especially the similarity with the OECD. In the first regression, Schott used ESItc as dependent variable and regressed it on Xtc and CHINAtc (ESItc =αt +βXtc +γCHINAtc +εtpc), in which Xtc is a country characteristic including capital abundance and skill abundance represented by per capita GDP and the share of population attaining secondary or higher education, while CHINAtc is a dummy variable with the value of 1 if the product is from China, and αt is a year fixed effect. In the second regression, Schott exploited the same methodology as the former, just changing the dependent variable, see below, log(utpc) =αtp +βXtc +γCHINAtc +εtp, where utpc is the unit value of product p from country c in year t and αtp is a year-product fixed effect. The outcomes statistically identified the significance of these two equations as shown above, which implied that the countries’ ESI with the OECD and export prices are positively related to countries’ per capita GDP and skill abundance, at the same time, China’s ESI with the OECD is even higher than other countries with similar endowments, but Chinese export prices relative to its per capita GDP and skill abundance is declining over time. Schott also performed another comparison (UVRtpc= utpc/utpCHINA) to measure the relative prices between China and OECD, which is consistent with the lower Chinese prices.
In the conclusion sector, Schott emphasized two main sources of the relative sophistication of Chinese exports, one is the higher ESI with OECD, and the other is the lower prices relative to its per capita GDP, which have been tested in two regressions and is also consistent with the factor proportions framework as a theory basis. One thing is worthwhile to point out that, the conclusion is under the assumption of two-factor version only including labor and capital, as well as perfect competition without considering tariff, non-tariff barriers and other trade costs, which means countries’ exports to United States accurately reflect their domestic production, however, these restrictions do exist in reality. As a result of that, we can only roughly estimate the relative sophistication, but which is significant enough for us to explain the advantages of Chinese exports. For manufacturing product that is labor-intensive, China’s abundant labor because of huge population leads to lower cost, and then a relatively lower price makes its exports more attractive. Further more, China’s higher ESI with OECD but lower prices relative to OECD reinforces its sophistication. ......
May 15 Review Is OverMay 14 Curry GravyI really love Curry, no matter whether it could make me smell or not, just like it without any reasons. And, Priscilla likes it, I think, because she did enjoy the Curry Gravy with me tonight!
Last week I got cheap Gravy from 顺发 Supermarket, which is also the one of my favorites because I like the feeling when I chew it, very very Q! You know what I mean?
Tonight I couldn't wait to cook them——Initially, I meant to cook the whole gravy but it was really hard to cut by the blunt knife especially with my injured finger, and if I disgust you, please ignore the picture below
which took me a long long time to cut half of them, so gave up and stored the rest in the fridge for the next time.
Of course, put some vegetables, such like Chinese Cabbage, just a little bit, not expressing myself as a pure flesh-eater, I love vegetables as well!
![]() May 13 Review and ReviewLast night I finished my reading on the paper, after which I need to write a review, also it's the first time for me to write such kind of article, just like last year's DE essay.
Everything is hard at the beginning, so I just wrote down the title of the review, not knowing how to start yet......
Paper Review:
The Relative Sophistication of Chinese Exports
Brainstorming again and again...... May 12 Wendy's VouchersActually we failed to use the vouchers of buying one and getting one free, because it is only valid at Wendy's Ingle Farm and Castle Plaza, which is far away from city. Silly Jessie Q again, even it is clearly written on the vouchers which she has hold it for several weeks, she totally had no idea until the clerk mentioned that we couldn't use it in city when we were going to buy the ice-cream under Myer.
Anyway, I didn't want to waste my walk and the price of Wendy's is also reasonable——Just have a try, 2.70AUD for a small teddy, shown as the picture below:
How about Jessie's hand? So round, ha? May 11 Final Exam Timetable
It's come out in advance!
So great it is!
All the courses are arranged separately, so that I can distribute enough time for each.
Good luck to everyone! May 10 Good NewsI think it is coming to compensate my injured finger yesterday. LOL......
My AE's score has come out——The total score is 50, and I got 45, the averaged score is even less than 26.5!
And I think the teacher was a little bit angry about some students who made inferior mistakes during this exam, she announced on my Uni with serious tongue:
I have marked the mid semester test.
The marks are on MyUni - go to View Grades and note that the marks are out of 50, not a %. You will be able to collect your paper in tutorials next week. Solutions will be on MyUni after that. There were many very basic errors made in this test. For example, some students could not write down the correct hypothesis for testing the slope of a regression equation which is what we did today in BDA I! Also, I noticed that many students wrote way too much. You do not need to paraphrase the question - just answer it, and keep to the point. Please feel free to see me if you have any concerns with this test regards Anne International Diet DayNow, I'm in G38 of Napier Building which is the Postgraduate Office that we can access internet and also can use microwave stove here to cook our lunch. I've prepared two turkey's wings as my lunch last night but forgot to have folk with me this morning! How can I eat my lunch without such tool? There's not only wing that I can hold them directly by hand but also carrots and Chinese cabbages......
But I found the solution during the tutorial because I know the Uni Cafe in the Union House offers free plastic spoons and forks, which are only for one-time using and just meet my lazy idea, because I don't have to wash them after lunch,haha...... More fortunately, good things happened again, the free BBQ and free drinks, such as milk and coffee which are just served on the lawn in front of Union House! Expect for taking free folk from Uni Cafe, I only got one piece of meat pie because I heard from the lady who was addressing on the stage that today is International Diet Day! What a funny day!
They also offered cheap candy beans and show bags with Haight's Chocolates, only 50 cents and 3 Dollars respectively. Anyway I don't care how cheap it is, I just wanna get free offers, haha. Then I went back to G38 and told the good news to those hungry girls who were enjoying their lunch sitting around the table. Obviously they were quite interested in this free BBQ and planned to go there after lunch. So crazy, I bet when they get there it will be over.
Oh, God, I forgot to take a picture, even I have my camera in my bag! May 09 Pain...... |
