Xue guilty of wife's murder

The New Zealand man who abandoned his daughter at Melbourne's Southern Cross Railway station two years ago has been found guilty of murdering his wife.

A jury in the High Court in Auckland ruled Nai Yin Xue strangled his wife An An Liu a few days before he dumped the little girl nicknamed "Pumpkin" in Melbourne.

He then fled to the United States, but was caught after a group of Chinese-Americans recognised him from the TV show America's Most Wanted.

Ms Liu's body was found in the boot of his car in Auckland.

The crown alleged that 55-year-old Nai Yin Xue strangled his wife with a tie on September 15, 2007, and fled to Australia two days later with his three-year-old daughter.

As the verdict was read out Xue pumped his fist in the air and shouted "unfair, unfair, I'm innocent!".

Xue's daughter is being raised by her maternal grandmother in China.

On Tuesday the all-woman jury heard that Xue was violent and jealous and suspected his wife was involved with another man.

In evidence given last week, Xue's lawyer read out an internet chat note Ms Liu sent to a friend saying she had met a younger man after escaping violence at home.

The truck driver had made her feel "sexually ferocious like a wolf", she told her friend on the chat network QQ.

In court this week, forensic evidence appeared to support the view that the young mother had been seeing other men.

Forensic scientist Sally-Anne Harbison told the court that Ms Liu's red underwear contained DNA from Xue and at least two other mystery men.

Evidence has been heard from 95 people, including 10 Australians, with crown prosecutor Aaron Perkins painting a picture of a domineering man who twice threatened to kill his wife and had been unhappy with his daughter.

Defence lawyer Chris Comeskey has said Ms Liu was embarrassed by her older husband and used him for New Zealand residency, refusing to have sex with him after it was granted.

The non-parole period will be set next month.
